Short definition
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content and brand information so that answer engines — Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude — use it to answer questions and mention or cite your brand in the answer.
How AEO works
Answer engines try to give one direct answer instead of a list of links. To do that they retrieve pages they trust, extract the most relevant passage and summarise it. AEO makes your content the easiest, most trustworthy passage to extract.
- Open each page with a direct 40–60 word answer to its main question
- Use question-style headings followed by the answer, then the detail
- Present comparisons as tables and processes as numbered steps
- Add structured data (schema markup) and keep brand facts consistent everywhere
- Make sure pages are server-rendered so crawlers that don’t run JavaScript can read them
How AEO is measured
Rankings alone don’t show AEO success. Teams track a fixed set of buyer prompts across AI platforms each month and record whether the brand is mentioned, whether it’s cited with a link, how accurately it’s described and which sources the AI used.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be used and cited in the answer |
| Where it shows | Blue links on results pages | AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, voice, snippets |
| Main metric | Rankings, organic clicks | Mentions, citations, answer accuracy |
| Content style | Comprehensive pages for a keyword | Direct answers, tables, steps, sourced facts |
Common questions
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap heavily. SEO earns rankings; AEO earns a place inside the answer. Strong SEO is usually the foundation for AEO.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They are closely related. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is often used for the generative-AI part of AEO — tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity that write answers and cite sources.
