How to Get Your Brand Cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews: A 10-Step Checklist
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google “who’s the best [your category] in [your city]?” Are you in the answer? If not, this checklist is where to start.
A quick reality check first: nobody can guarantee a citation. AI providers control their systems and change them often. What you can control is how clear, consistent and credible the information about your brand is — and that’s what these ten steps address.
Step 1: Benchmark before you change anything
Write down 20–30 questions real buyers ask before choosing someone like you. Mix types:
- Category questions: “best SEO agency for SaaS in India”
- Problem questions: “why are my Google Ads getting clicks but no leads”
- Comparison questions: “n8n vs Zapier for a small business”
- Brand questions: “what does [your brand] do” and “is [your brand] good”
Run each in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (for AI Overviews). Record: are you mentioned, are you linked, is the description accurate, who is named instead, and which sources are cited.
Step 2: Make sure AI crawlers can read your pages
Many AI crawlers fetch raw HTML and don’t run JavaScript. If your headings, services or FAQs only appear after client-side rendering, they may see an almost empty page.
- Server-render or statically generate important content.
- Check robots.txt isn’t blocking crawlers you want, such as OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended.
- Keep a clean XML sitemap with accurate last-modified dates.
Step 3: Write one canonical brand description
Draft a single, factual sentence: who you are, what you do, for whom, and where. Use it — word for word or very close — on your About page, homepage, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and in your Organization schema. Consistency helps systems resolve you as one clear entity.
Step 4: Fix your entity footprint
Audit the places AI tools pull brand facts from:
- Google Business Profile (name, address, phone, categories, hours)
- LinkedIn company page
- Industry directories and review platforms
- Wikidata, Crunchbase or similar where relevant
- Founder and team profiles
Correct anything outdated. Old addresses, former service lines and inconsistent names are common causes of inaccurate AI descriptions.
Step 5: Answer the question in the first 60 words
For each important page, identify the main question it answers and answer it directly at the top — in 40 to 60 words — before you add context. This is the passage most likely to be extracted.
Step 6: Structure content for extraction
- Use question-style H2s that match how buyers ask.
- Put comparisons in a real HTML table.
- Put processes in a numbered list.
- Give specific numbers with a source and a date.
- Add a visible “last updated” date and a named author with real credentials.
Step 7: Add schema generated from your content
At minimum: Organization (with logo, contact and sameAs links), WebSite, BreadcrumbList, and on relevant pages Service, FAQPage and Article with author. Generate it from the same data as the page so it never contradicts what’s visible, and validate it.
Step 8: Publish an llms.txt file
An llms.txt file at your domain root summarises your company in Markdown and links to your key pages. It’s a proposed standard and not a guaranteed ranking factor, but it’s cheap to maintain and helps tools that use it.
Step 9: Earn mentions where AI looks
Look at the sources cited in your Step 1 benchmark. These are often listicles, review platforms, forums, news articles and directories. Then work on being present there legitimately: reviews from real customers, expert commentary, original data that journalists and bloggers want to reference, and listings on relevant platforms.
Step 10: Track monthly and iterate
Re-run your prompt set every month. Track four numbers:
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often you’re named |
| Citation rate | How often your site is linked as a source |
| Accuracy | Whether facts about you are correct |
| Competitor share | Who is winning the answers you’re missing |
Pair it with GA4 referral traffic from AI assistants to see whether visibility turns into visits and enquiries.
Where to start if you only have a week
- Run the benchmark (Step 1).
- Fix robots.txt and any client-side-only content (Step 2).
- Rewrite the top of your five most important pages with direct answers (Step 5).
- Align your Google Business Profile and LinkedIn with your canonical description (Steps 3–4).

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Organic answers in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can’t be bought. Some platforms are experimenting with clearly labelled ads, but being cited in the answer itself depends on the quality and consistency of information about your brand.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
AI tools that search the web at answer time can reflect on-site and entity fixes within weeks. What models ‘know’ from training changes more slowly.
Does llms.txt get me cited?
There’s no evidence it’s a ranking factor on its own. It’s a cheap, sensible addition that helps AI tools that do read it, and it forces you to state your key facts clearly.
